The Runner

RUNNER
Graham Broyd
I am a Masters Track runner. I run the 200 and 400 meters, and some relays.
I ran for 6 weeks at High School and was quite quick, but I was playing other sports and had other life objectives. I did not sprint again for 40 years. I ran the London Marathon in 2013, was terrible and embarrassed, but wanted to stay fit. I introduced myself to a local coach at a club in White Plains, and asked him to watch me. I ran a few laps with the club runners, slowly and ponderously. I asked his opinion.
“I have no idea how you ever ran a marathon,” he advised.
I thought how awful I must have looked.
“No, no”, he remonstrated, noting my concern. “Usain Bolt could not run a Marathon, it would be physically impossible for him. You stride like a 400-meter runner. If you want to do Masters Track, I would be happy to help.”
And that is how we started the journey.
I have slowly progressed from local meets, to State Championships, to US Nationals and have recently represented the US National team at both the World Outdoor Championships in Sweden in 2024, and the Indoors at Florida in 2025.
I will share the stories and photos behind the major championships each year and the background behind my running book(s) – “Faster Than You at 60 – The inspiring backstories of the worlds fastest men and women sprinters – over 60.”
